CBHN kick's off its Health4Life Series with Tiffany Derry, Celebrity Chef, Reality TV Star, Entrepreneur, and Novo Nordisk Ambassador
(Black PR Wire) - SACRAMENTO, CA – On October 28, the California Black Health Network (CBHN) will kick off its Health4Life series with a live cooking demonstration featuring Novo Nordisk Ambassador Chef Tiffany Derry. Health4Life is a health and wellness education initiative designed to help Black Californians become more empowered to take charge of their health and wellness. This inaugural event will set the stage for National Diabetes Awareness Month in November and brings together CBHN and Chef Derry with the shared goal of improving health literacy among participants.
“We’re beyond honored to have Chef Tiffany Derry kick off the initiative. We hope that this event inspires our audience to make small but meaningful changes in their lives and learn how to cook and eat healthy for life without having to sacrifice the foods they love,” said Rhonda M. Smith, CBHN Executive Director
Although preventable in many cases, diabetes is one of America’s fastest-growing diseases and one of the most costly. It’s estimated that about 25 million American adults have diabetes, but the burden of the disease is not evenly shared. The Black population has one of the highest rates of diabetes, as well as hypertension and heart disease than other groups – nearly 15% of Black Americans have diabetes compared to 8% of white Americans. Specifically, Type 2 diabetes hits communities of color the hardest, where access to health care and health choices can be limited by income, education, and geography.[1]
“I often hear that ‘healthy foods are too expensive’ or ‘healthy food has to be flavorless or bland.’ I encourage the event participants to challenge that status quo,” said Chef Tiffany Derry, “Top Chef” alumna and Novo Nordisk Ambassador. “As a chef and wellness advocate, it’s my intention to breathe life, color, and flavor into every meal I make, and teach others how to do so as well.”
While cooking, Chef Derry will also provide her tips and tricks on how to adopt healthy living habits, take steps to be more proactive and take control of your health and well-being. CBHN will also be giving out some prizes along the way.
