(BLACK PR WIRE) (June 22, 2009)LANDOVER, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Prince George’s Community Foundation (PGCF), an affiliate of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, announced today that The World Banks Community Connections Fund has awarded a major grant of $100,000 to The Partnership for Prince George’s County. The Partnership is comprised of a diverse group of Washington, DC-area private, corporate, and foundation funders dedicated to strengthening nonprofit organizations in Prince George’s County, MD.
The World Bank grant could not come at a better time. Prince George’s County has the highest foreclosure rate in the State of Maryland, and its nonprofit safety-net providers such as food banks, shelters, and clothing and meal programs are facing an exponential demand for services in a time of dwindling donations.
The grant is another example of how The Community Foundation for the National Capital Regions Neighbors in Need campaign, helping safety net nonprofits across the Washington area provide services now and in the future.
Clearly, now is not the time to stand idly by and watch our neighbors suffer, said Viki Betancourt, Manager of The Banks Community Outreach Program. Thanks to the generous contributions of World Bank employees, we’re able to help strengthen Prince George’s County nonprofits now and into the future.
It goes without saying that residents of Prince George’s County are experiencing the same hardships as those across other parts of the Washington metropolitan area, said Desiree Griffin Moore, PGCF Executive Director. The difference is, many of Prince George’s County’s nonprofit organizations traditionally have had limited access to resources and, therefore, limited ability to sustain their efforts over time. Thanks to The World Banks Community Connections Program, The Partnership for Prince George’s County will be better able to invest in the county’s most effective safety net nonprofits.
Founded in 1973, The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region manages nearly 700 charitable-giving funds established by individuals, families, corporations and other organizations. The Foundation also has its own discretionary grant-making dollars. In FY2008, The Foundation distributed more than $91 million in grants to nonprofit organizations in the Washington, DC region and beyond. The Foundation has three affiliates Alexandria Community Trust, The Montgomery County Community Foundation, and The Prince George’s Community Foundation.
