( BPRW) Comcast and GOLF CHANNEL Roll Out Series to Introduce America's Youth to Golf's African-American Pioneers

(BLACK PR WIRE)(July 23, 2009) WASHINGTON & PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) and GOLF CHANNEL announced the rollout of a program designed to introduce youth to the heroic story of African-Americans who struggled to find their fair place in golf. The program is built around distribution of Uneven Fairways, a documentary chronicling the little-known, but rich history of African-Americans in golf through never-before-seen archival footage and revealing stories of the men and women who faced prejudice and endured indignities to play golf at its highest level.

This is an important documentary and one we’re pleased to bring to many young people across the country, said David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President, Comcast Corporation. The documentary and the book present a unique opportunity to talk about a difficult chapter in American history and the tenacity of many African-Americans who had the courage to stand up for their rights.

In three markets this fall (Atlanta, Baltimore, and Boston), Comcast will host events at area schools and youth organizations. Each event will include a screening and discussion with one of the golfers featured in the film. Each child attending will receive a copy of the DVD and Pete McDaniel’s book, Uneven Lies: The Heroic Story of African-Americans in Golf.

Uneven Fairways will be one of the most compelling programs we will air in 2009, said GOLF CHANNEL President Page Thompson. These are inspiring stories of golfers who overcame great odds just to create a tour where they could compete. It’s a fascinating and important story and we are all proud to tell it.

Uneven Fairways, produced by GOLF CHANNEL and Moxie Pictures, features interviews with many legendary golfers, including John Shippen, Charlie Sifford, Bill Spiller, Ted Rhodes, Joe Louis, and the four time winner of the Masters, Tiger Woods. When speaking of his predecessors, Woods notes that, They were true pioneers. If it wasn’t for their focus and dedication to the great love of the game of golf, as I said, my father probably wouldn’t have played the game because he wouldn’t have had access to the game so, in essence, I owe my entire career to them and their pioneering efforts.
