Rules Are Meant To Guide

(BLACK PR WIRE) Miami, FL—September 8, 2009—Rules are meant to guide, but disturbingly enough, fraternities and sororities across the spectrum need more than rules for guidance. Greek life has steered away from the structure and ideals established by their founders and “Problems on the Yard: Dysfunctional Greeks” by Kennedy C. Achille, M.S. formally exposes, addresses and challenges the ever-growing conflicts in collegiate Greek organizations.

Mr. Kennedy C. Achille has been a member of the College Greek Community since 1996 and still continues to carry a burning desire to educate College Greeks on the origins and existence of college fraternities and sororities. “I wrote the book to highlight the dangers of the college Greek system,” explained the 31-year-old. “College Greeks share too many similarities with violent street gangs and have lost focus of their existence,” he added.

Bold and abrupt throughout 180 pages, Achille said he didn’t sugar coat the truth because he wanted to genuinely critique and give advice. “This book is for the betterment of collegiate Greek organizations. The truth may offend, but I am doing this out of devotion for the well being of Greek life. I am sure there are thousands of Greeks who care as much as I do, but my approach to progressive change is what some might call tough love.” The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. Although the book might appear to be bashing these organizations, the author believes it will also do them some good to have these issues out in the open. He hopes the book will motivate Greeks to correct their unconventional ways and continue to serve their original purpose, which is to focus on academics and community service. “I ‘call out’ everyone’s issues and once they finish reading the book, they can be one of two things: enlightened or outraged.”

Due for release this November at Florida International University, the expos is expected to stir up some mixed feelings. Divergence and issues are generally kept secret within each organization but the release of “Problems on the Yard: Dysfunctional Greeks” will relinquish control over private information regarding problems with infrastructure. However, it is not private enough since one can openly observe their discrepancies. What makes the topic sensitive is the fact that non-Greeks will also be able to understand and read about the organization’s faults.

“This book is direct and is very graphic about the clear and present dangers in the college Greek system today,” says Cassandra Lafalaise, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. However, while some appreciate Achille’s straight-forward illustration, others might not respond as positively.

No system is perfect and inevitably, with time comes change. Achille said the book should provoke readers to develop a new attitude about what it means to be in a fraternity or sorority and rethink the organization’s purpose.
