(BPRW) Florida Memorial University Aims to Place More Blacks in Math and Science Fields with High School Summer Program

(BLACK PR WIRE) – MIAMI GARDENS, FL (June 9, 2011) – Florida Memorial University (FMU), southern Florida’s only historically black university, launched the Black Male College Explorers Program’s (BMCEP) summer residential program on June 12, 2011. The program will expose local high school students to the college environment and career opportunities in the traditionally overlooked fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“This year, we chose to focus on STEM subjects because we want to help make kids more comfortable in a college setting and familiar with these courses,” said Kareem Coney, director of the BMCEP. “I am excited about the opportunity to train the next generation of scientists, engineers and math experts right here on FMU’s campus.”

Dr. Makola Abdullah, provost and vice president for academic affairs, has coordinated the wider school support for the effort. “Sometimes, young people are intimidated by STEM courses, and this program seeks to change that,” shared Abdullah on the program’s purpose.

According to Black Enterprise, the 10 highest-paying majors for African-Americans are in STEM industries. Yet, only one-third of African-American college students select these majors. FMU is committed to increasing the pool of African-American professionals in these fields.

“Education erases intimidation,” Abdullah continued. “It is our responsibility as a university family to give our students the resources and confidence they need to compete in the global marketplace.”
