(BPRW) RENOWNED FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN ARTIST JAMES GIBSON TO SHOWCASE PAINTINGS AT CHARITY OPEN THIS SATURDAY

(BLACK PR WIRE) – WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – One of the legendary Florida Highwaymen artists, James Gibson, will host a rare showcase of his work at the Gerald A. Williams Legacy Foundation Charity Open this Saturday, October 20. Hosted by 40 prominent South Floridians, the charity open will unite leaders from the legal, academic, philanthropic, religious, corporate and civic communities for a memorable day of golf, recognition and fun! The scholarship fundraiser will be held at the President Country Club (2300 Presidential Way in West Palm Beach), and feature an 8:30 a.m. golf tournament and 12:30 p.m. Awards Luncheon. Gibson will co-host the morning clubhouse event for non-golfers to be held at 9:30 a.m. He has also donated a number of pieces for the charity’s silent auction to take place throughout the day.

“We are so honored that a historic Florida figure like James Gibson has signed on to support the inaugural Charity Open,” said Carolyn L. Williams of the Gerald A. Williams Legacy Foundation. “Gerald’s outstanding legal career paved the way for so many behind him, so it is only fitting that James, a trailblazer in his own right, share in the celebration. The clubhouse event will feature his timeless works, music, refreshments and much more – all of South Florida is invited to attend!”

The Florida Highwaymen were a group of 26 African-American artists that painted landscapes across the state during the racially-divided 1950s. Self-taught and shunned by galleries, they mentored each other and made a living selling their pieces on roadways from the trunks of their cars. Many members of the group, now in their seventies and eighties, continue to paint and have produced some of the most noted images for the Florida environment. After gaining significant notoriety in the mid-1990s, their works can now be found in museums throughout the state.

The Gerald A. Williams Legacy Foundation, a component fund of the U.S. Charitable Gift Trust, was established in 2010 to promote academic achievement and professional advancement in law. The foundation supports the Gerald A. Williams, Esq. Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, the Gerald A. Williams, Esq. Law Academy Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, and charitable endeavors providing growth opportunities for aspiring young minds.
