(BPRW) Three Spelman Graduates Earn Fulbright Fellowships

(Black PR Wire) ATLANTA – Three recent Spelman College graduates have been named Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholars. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and citizens of other countries.

Spelman graduates will participate in Fulbright’s English Assistant Program, which places scholars in schools overseas to supplement English language instruction, for the 2018-2019 academic year. Taylor Hall-Debnam, C’2018, a political science major and comparative women’s studies minor, will teach English in Malaysia; Eniola Sodeke, C’2018, an international studies major, will complete the Fulbright program in South Korea; and Kayla Evans, C’2018, an international studies major, will work in Colombia.

Within the last 19 years, 51 Spelman graduates have been awarded Fulbright fellowships.

“Spelman has been on the Fulbright top producing list for liberal arts colleges for multiple years,” said Margery Ganz, Ph.D., Spelman's Fulbright program adviser and professor emerita of history. “Over the years, we have been most successful with Fulbright, often winning three to four Fulbright awards, and five in especially good years.”

Sodeke’s passion for culture, learning about others and exchanging knowledge prompted her to apply for a Fulbright award.

“Through my life journey, I have been centered on cultivating global comprehension. My goal has also been to exist where I can share and receive the most knowledge,” said Sodeke. “That is one of the reasons I chose to attend Spelman. Spelman has equipped me with the confidence, education, and experience to enter the global community. Being in South Korea as a Fulbright scholar will be monumental in building my skills for leadership in the global community.”
