(BPRW) The Elijah Muhammad House™ Nomination For The National Register of Historic Places

An Important Piece of Property in Modern Day Black History

(Black PR Wire) Chicago, Illinois -- We are excited to announce that The Elijah Muhammad House™ Museum located at 4847 South Woodlawn Avenue in Chicago, also known as Sajdah House® has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.  This Historic Home is the single most important piece of property in modern day Black History.  The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his Wife, Mother Clara Muhammad, hosted hundreds of Leaders, Activists, Athletes, Entertainers, and Iconic Black people who met, dined, and visited them in their home from 1952-1974.

From the great Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mrs. Coretta Scott King, Senator Adam Clayton Powell, Judge Thurgood Marshall, Dick Gregory, James Baldwin, Minister Louis Farrakhan, Tynetta Muhammad, Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Mrs. Betty Shabazz, Kwame Toure, Reverend Ralph Abernathy, Wilma Rudolph, James Brown, Sam Cooke and many many more.

The nomination was based on the following criteria:

The property is associated with the lives of persons significant to our past

Areas of Significance:

  • Religion
  • Social History
  • Ethnic Heritage

The nominating committee has indicated that: “The property appears to retain enough integrity and would be nationally significant for its association with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, a religious leader of the Nation of Islam who was an important figure within the African American community the Civil Rights Movement. The period of significance would be 1952 - 1973, the years he resided there.”


The City of Chicago Program Committee of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks will be meeting to review the nomination on September 22, 2021.  The nomination will recognize the history and architecture of the individual building.

Letters of Support:  If people want to submit support letters, they should submit them no later than 24 hours before the September 22nd meeting to

Live Support Testimony:  For those who want to speak, they should send a request to no later than 48 hours before the September 22 meeting.

Meeting Attendance:  We would like you to attend the meeting in person.  Currently the Chicago Department of Planning meeting is scheduled to be held in City Hall at 121 North LaSalle Street, Room 1103, but it is possible that the meeting will switch to remote format should the Governor continue the disaster declaration for the State of Illinois.  Unfortunately, we won't know until the current declaration runs out on September 19.  They will be posting the final details at
